Understanding Cardiac Catheterization

Cardiac catheterization, often referred to as cardiac cath or coronary angiogram, is an invasive diagnostic procedure that enables healthcare professionals to assess the functionality of the heart. The process involves inserting a coronary catheter (a slender tube) into a blood vessel, typically in the arm or groin, and guiding it into the coronary arteries. This method helps identify cardiac issues, allowing for potential interventions during the same visit. For example, a provider might repair a congenital heart defect or replace a valve instead of traditional surgery.

Cardiac Catheterization Procedure 

During the cardiac catheterization procedure, your healthcare provider will first administer a numbing medication under your skin using a small needle. They will then insert a plastic introducer sheath—a short, hollow tube—into a blood vessel in your arm, neck, or groin. Through this sheath, a coronary catheter will be threaded into your heart’s arteries. While you may feel some pressure during this insertion, it shouldn't be painful; if you do experience any discomfort, please inform your provider immediately.

Positioning the Coronary Catheter 

To help position the coronary catheter, your provider might ask you to turn your head or take a deep breath and hold it for a few seconds.

Injecting Contrast Material 

Once the catheter is correctly positioned, the room lights will be dimmed, and a small amount of contrast material will be injected through the catheter into your heart and arteries. This contrast material will outline the vessels, valves, and chambers, making it easier for your provider to assess your heart’s condition.

Imaging and Monitoring 

As the contrast flows into your heart, you may feel a brief sensation of warmth or flushing; this is a normal reaction and will subside quickly.

Your provider will then use an X-ray camera to take images of your arteries and heart chambers while the contrast material is circulating. You may need to hold your breath briefly while these X-rays are captured. After all necessary images are taken, the coronary catheter will be removed, and the lights will be turned back on.

Safe Removal of the Sheath

Careful removal of the introducer sheath is crucial, as improper handling can lead to bleeding. Your provider will ask you to remain as still as possible during this step to ensure your safety. Following the procedure, they will discuss the findings, including any potential need for further interventions or the use of a cardiac catheter sheath for additional procedures. This thorough approach ensures you receive the best care possible.
